Weeknotes #51 (October 25, 2025)

Things I found, read, did, and produced this past week.
Things I made
- I was tinkering around with the Helm Go SDK in order to try out how to programatically spin up and down helm charts rather than just using the CLI.
- I wrote up about my physical journalling processes and the benefits I get by doing it by hand rather than digitally: Daily Journalling with Pen and Paper in 2025
Things I consumed
- So AWS's us-east-1 region had an outage this past week for half a day, and sadly as usual it was DNS. Further digging into the post-mortem from Amazon, it is fascinating how at one point Amazon touts itself for high availability and reliability but at the same time a bunch of resources like EC2, Lambda, IAM, among others all depend on DynamoDB to function and due to the DNS failures Dynamo went down and things cascaded. AWS has regions globally and you'd think if one region went down things would failover to other regions, but that seems to not be the case. I'm not downplaying that hosting global internet infrastructure is an easy task, but for a platform that has existed for decades I would think some main things would have failover options by now.
- I finally got to the credits of Hades 2 this weekend after playing over 50 runs to get to such. I really like the scaling of Hades and Hades 2 and similar games where it is hard at the start given you don't know the enemies or what builds to make given it is a roguelike, but it scales to the flipside of being able to make silly builds when you get a feel for the game and then you can make the game as easy or as hard as you wish.
